Tasmania is a spectacular place to visit, a great place to hike and the food in Tasmania, is second to none.  Pure with a great reputation. That sums up food and drink in Tasmania. You can’t go wrong here. The food is outstanding and most vegetables grow perfectly in Tasmania.

Potatoes might seem a little plain for Tasmania, but trust me Tasmanian potatoes are just perfect, so why not? Tasmania has a gentle climate, just right for the growing of vegetables.

Farm Gate Market, Hobart

As you would expect in Tasmania, there is no shortage of farmer’s markets open to the public. I am not sure whether the prime purpose for going to the farmer’s market is for buying the weekly food and vegetables or whether to taste test all the different stands’ products.  But is definitely a very social way to shop.

We had a most pleasant, Sunday morning in Hobart at the Farm Gate Market. This market is on every Sunday in Hobart.

We always start off at a new farmer’s market by purchasing a cup of coffee and perusing the stalls to see what catches our fancy for later shopping. A good way to see what is available before committing. We formulate a plan as to what we want and then we go about the business of shopping.

With a very temperate climate Tasmania sells a good range of locally produced farm goods. Including all sorts of vegetables, lamb, beef and native meats are also available for purchase.

Specialist stalls sell local jams and chutneys, marinades, honey and lavender products. There is no shortage of food to buy.

It is also a great market to buy pre-prepared foods such as scallops cooked in a variety of ways. Salmon, which has a great reputation for quality in Tasmania, – either smoked or ready to cook. Different pasta and risotto dishes, slow-cooked casserole dishes and many other prepared meals are also available.

Tasmania is a secret that has not quite got out to the rest of the world yet in my opinion. It has everything for the tourist and the foodie.

Sarah, nice touch with yogurt and feta. Cheese is a perfect optional extra and we do add some occasionally ourselves.
